The Hills are Alive: Seven of My Favorite Things on the the 128th Performance of the sound of music in Manila

It was the 128th theater performance, the curtain call, of the Sound of Music  in Manila. A feat that has never been done before. It was officially the longest-running Rodgers and Hammerstein play in Southeast Asia. The well-loved, generation-crossing play which was adapted into big screen and now back to play again was well-received.

As a certified Sound-of-Music junkie but a first-timer and not actually a theater-goer, the moment was thrilling to behold. Each act is worth applauding. Here are seven interesting things:

1)      It was an all-Filipino cast lead by world-class and West London artist Joanna Ampil (and Cris Villonco) as Maria Rainer and veteran stage actor Audie Gemora (Jon Joven and Ariel Rivera) as Captain Von Trapp

2)      This was already extended twice. It started on October 15, 2011 and should have originally ended on December 2012 but was moved to February 12, 2012 and was extended again finally up until May 27, 2012.

3)      The cast and the people who worked behind the play are fantastic: Cris Villonco (the other stage actress who played Maria) already performed in front of Pope John Paul II in St. Francis Square during the Jubilee mass and was named one of Time Magazine’s “Heroes of the Planet”. Director Rozanne Lapuz is a recent hall-of-famer in a local award-giving body for her contribution in live entertainment; and Francis Libiran, who was featured in the America’s Next Top Model British Invasion, took care of the wardrobe works.

4)      As usual, Gretl is an instant crowd favorite because of her adorable cuteness.

5)      The big LCD (Liquide Crystal Display) screen, wonderful props and the revolving stage were a delight.  The convent scenery (Nonnberg Abbey) and the mansion were stand-out (s)?

6)      They added three new songs.

7)      There’s an unverified news going around that there’s a plan to mount the same musical and cast in other countries like Singapore.

The Sound of Music is presented through special arrangement with Broadway Asia Company, LLC, and The Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatre Library.

The next world-class presentation of Resort World Manila is Anna and the King with Monique Wilson and Leo Valdez.
